“Vanessa atalanta”-Nabokov’s favorite butterfly and prominent symbol in Pale Fire, especially after Hazel’s suicide where she transforms from the plain Toothwort White butterfly to the glorious Vanessa atalanta butterfly. As a Vanessa, she tries to warn her father to stay home but he is murdered on his walk with Kinbote instead.
